Why should parents take on the responsibility to be personal reading coaches for their children?
Because hiding in plain sight is a serious reading problem shared by most of our children-and maybe including your kids.
It’s time to make certain that all our children can read at or above proficiency. NAEP results show that classroom based reading instruction ALONE isn’t enough, or worse, may not work at all for many kids. This is not intended as a criticism of teachers, rather it is a reflection of the realities of the classroom and the limitations of the reading curriculum. It is clear that as a nation we are going in the wrong direction.
But, there is a solution to this messy reading dilemma. Reading research confirms that high impact one-on-one tutorials is the most successful and fastest intervention for raising reading achievement. A recent meta- analysis of tutoring programs found that, on average, personal tutoring increased achievement by an additional three to 15 months across grade levels.
Another review of almost 200 research studies found that high impact tutoring is one of the few interventions with demonstrated large positive effects on reading achievement. Finally, another study looked at various types of interventions and concluded that personal tutoring was the most effective.
Dr. Campanaro’s years of experience training parents has shown that with proper training parents can be the best personal reading coach for their children.

The Parents 4 Better Reading movement was founded by Dr. Mario Campanaro, a recognized reading expert. (Click his name at the top of page to learn more about him). He started this movement because the reading performance of our children is in serious trouble. The recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), a national assessment administered every two years in grades 4, 8, and 12, shows that only 31% of fourth graders are reading at a proficiency level. Moreover, scores at all grades dropped despite having the highest per pupil expenditure of any nation in the world.
Why Should Parents Pay Attention to NAEP Scores?
Your child may not have taken the NAEP assessment, but the results are important for all parents to know because these data reveal worrisome facts about how well students understand what they read- including your child. School reading assessment data reported to parents typically focuses on reading sub-skills with insufficient attention paid to reading comprehension. The NAEP assessment goes deeper to determine comprehension that most school based assessments.
The Solution
Dr. Campanaro has developed an easy to implement one-on-one tutoring approach that considers the needs of both parents and children. In just 15-20 minute tutorials 3-5 days a week parents provide the targeted tutoring their children need. In short 15-20 minute “Power Bursts” sessions, the read-aloud becomes the driving force to better reading. When combined with the ongoing guidance from Dr. Campanaro, parents can easily become the expert reading coach your children need to soar as readers.

Getting Started
We train parents( grandparents & others too) to be personal Reading Coaches.
When you join the Parents 4 Better Reading community you are provided with all that you need to become a high impact personal reading coach for your children. You will receive an assessment based tutorial plan tailored to the specific reading needs of your child, and monthly newsletters(10) filled with tutoring tips and reading best practices articles.
You also receive on line training to learn:

Designed for the busy parent, you decide the day and time you want to receive your online training and follow-up sessions with Dr. Campanaro. Detailed one-on-one sessions with you provide the continuing guidance and support you need to tutor with confidence and effectiveness.
In addition to the materials, tutorial plan, and personal training, you also receive a monthly newsletter(10) to keep you current on the latest research and reading best practices. Each newsletter is filled with tutoring tips and research-based best practices to help your children be better readers. The fine grain analysis included in each newsletter adds to an already solid framework that assures expert tutoring.
Included in Parents 4 Better Reading as noted is two hours of personal interaction with Dr. Campanaro for advanced training and on-going support. Additional parent training, if needed, is available for $50 per half-hour.
