Parents As Personal Reading Coaches

Only 31% of fourth grade students read at a proficiency level according to the recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

But, there is a solution to this messy reading dilemma. Reading research confirms that the single most successful method for raising reading performance is one-on- one tutorials.

It’s time to make certain that all our children can read at or above proficiency. The NAEP results scream loudly that our schools can’t provide children with the amount of personal tutoring they need.

NAEP results show that classroom based reading instruction ALONE isn’t enough, or worse, may not work for many kids. This is not intended as a criticism of teachers, rather it is a reflection of the realities of the classroom and the limitations of the reading curriculum that is typically a mile wide and an inch deep in many schools. It is clear that as a nation we are going in the wrong direction.
